[Track Review] The 1975 Knows "The Sound" of Your Heart

By Austin T. Murphy

The 1975 - "The Sound"

Veteran English band The 1975 dropped their sophomore full-length release "I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It” -- try saying that five times fast -- last Friday. In anticipation of the new album, they have released three separate singles over the course of the past year, "Love Me," "UGH!" and "The Sound."

The last of the three debuted back in January, eventually making its way to the top of the "New" section of my iPhone's Music app. With "The Sound" the band has certainly trapped themselves in the predicament of releasing an unabashedly upbeat song that features little variation or surprises.

Fortunately for The 1975, "The Sound" isn't quite long enough that it becomes boring and trite by the end. The message is relatable, and the vibes are positive enough that it is worthy of a slot in whatever playlist you prefer for happy, pop music. Not to mention that Matthew Healy's guitar solo towards the end provides a welcome contrast in tone and shows off some much-needed instrumental creativity.
